Waino’s World: A St. Louis Cardinals Fantasy Sports Experience
Some may be surprised to know that an estimated 13% of the American population play fantasy sports. MLB All Star pitcher, Adam Wainwright, is among that growing populace who enjoy these silly little (i.e. very fun and exciting) games. However, he has taken the enjoyment of this hobby and found a way to make it work for the community. Waino’s World is an unique fantasy experience where 44 fans, with $2,500 to give, play in a fantasy football league with Adam and fellow St. Louis Cardinals, David Freese, Matt Holliday, and Allen Craig.
On Friday, August 23rd, Waino’s World held its fantasy draft at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The participating fans received a catered brunch at the stadium, got to meet the participating athletes before drafting with them, stick around for the Cardinals’ batting practice afterwards, and watch the St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Atlanta Braves, 3-1 that evening from a party suite.
You might count these 44 fans lucky, but there are other beneficiaries at stake as well. One hundred percent of the $110,000 rose through entry fees will benefit Operation Food Search and Water Missions International. So, while the participating fans will enjoy a once in a lifetime experience as they compete with these pro athletes throughout the upcoming football season for bragging rights and various prizes, the real winners are those less fortunate who will continue to see the aftereffects of these donations well beyond the end of football season.
