For the next few weeks, we get to enjoy the holiday lights, the music, and the parties. In other words, the most wonderful time of the year! Then there are those who are not dreaming about any of this, rather wondering if they will have a next meal. When you think about Christmas cheer, also think about those  in need. Here are a few ways you can bring cheer to someone else –  volunteer in New York City during this beautiful time of year leading up to Christmas morning.

1. Bowery Mission, Host a Food or Clothing Drive
The Bowery Mission provides more than 369,200 meals, 30,500 bags of groceries, and 53,200 articles of clothing to men, women and children in desperate need of help.  They rely on donated food and clothing to meet these important needs.  Perhaps you’d like to consider hosting your own food or clothing drive at your office, congregation, school or organization. Together with the Bowery Mission they will help you launch a successful drive that will bless those being served. Most needed items are: jeans, sweaters, underwear, shoes, warm coats and business attire for those reentering the workforce.

2. City Harvest & No Kid Hungry, Food Repacks
Get involved with the No Kid Hungry mission to end hunger in your community this Christmas. You can sort and redistribute bulk donations into smaller, family-sized portions that the partners of City Harvest can distribute to clients. The best way to get additional information and get involved is to attend one of their volunteer orientations.

4. Holiday Toy Distribution
Every year, Cathedral Community Cares (CCC) works with volunteers and organizations such as the NBC Today Show Toy Drive to provide holiday toys to underserved families in West Harlem. Volunteers are needed to assist CCC in their annual toy distribution. Volunteers will help set up the “toy shop” in the CCC office and guide parents through as they choose toys for their children.
Volunteers are needed December 18-20th, 2013.

5. God’s Love We Deliver – Christmas Eve Morning
God’s Love hosts a big volunteer day on Christmas Eve morning. They cook, package and deliver holiday meals for each of their clients and also provide them with a guest meal if they request one. Each meal is cooked and packaged at the agency in Brooklyn and then distributed to the holiday meal centers throughout the 5 boroughs. They are currently in need of volunteers to work as on-site assistants at each meal distribution center, as well as drivers who would use their own vehicles to pick up meals from the centers and deliver them directly to their clients.
