verlander

You would be hard pressed to find a sports fan who does not know the name, Justin Verlander. As the only pitcher to win the Rookie of the Year Award, Cy Young Award, MVP Award, and a Triple Crown, he has all but secured himself a place in Cooperstown and Major League Baseball history. If you can’t find time to watch him from the mound, be on the lookout at the newsstand, gaming retailer, or my ESPN Fantasy baseball team.

All that aside, Verlander deserves recognition beyond his on-field performance. The Detroit Tigers All-Star has donated $1 million to his newly founded initiative, Wins for Warriors. With Justin’s generous donation, his initiative will partner with Give an Hour and The Mission Continues to make a positive impact with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans and their families in Detroit, Norfolk, and Richmond. If you are fortunate enough in your life to know a soldier, you most certainly know the toll a war-zone can take on one’s mental health and emotional state. Seeking help can often go overlooked, but these organizations work to improve those areas in these heroes’ lives.

As if that weren’t enough, Wins for Warriors has also teamed up with Crowdrise to raise more support through the end of this season. All new funds acquired will be matched dollar for dollar by Justin. If there isn’t a Hall of Fame for being of great character, they really ought to make one for people like Justin Verlander. His commitment to supporting our troops is a true win.

About Give an Hour
Give an Hour asks mental health professionals nationwide to donate an hour of their time each week to provide free mental health services to military personnel and their families. The organization currently has nearly 7,000 providers nationwide who have already donated 94,000 hours of service, valued at $9.4 million. Partnering with Wins for Warriors, Give an Hour will launch two new positions on the ground in Detroit and the Richmond/Norfolk markets in order to coordinate services and provide additional mental health support and care to the military communities there.

About The Missions Continues
The Mission Continues awards community service fellowships to post-9/11 Veterans, empowering them to transform their own lives by serving others and directly impacting their communities. The organization has been successful in dramatically improving the well-being of Veterans, helping them develop a sense of purpose and identity outside of military service. Partnering with Wins for Warriors, three new fellowships will be created, one from each of the three target regions.
